Did You Know Cloud Computing with AWS Lowers Your Carbon Footprint?

May 5, 2023 | AWS

By harnessing the power of cloud computing, you can enhance productivity while also making a positive impact on the environment. Research shows that with the use of cloud computing, specifically with Amazon Web Services (AWS), customers can reduce their carbon footprint by up to 80 percent compared to on-premises data centers.

By leveraging the infrastructure and resources of cloud providers like AWS, businesses can contribute to a greener planet. In this article, we’ll explore how cloud computing can help you achieve your business goals while also reducing your carbon footprint.

More Energy Efficient

The use of cloud computing enables data centers to focus on efficiency across all aspects of their infrastructure. AWS’s infrastructure is 3.6 times more energy efficient than the median of US enterprise data centers. In Europe, AWS is up to five times more energy efficient than the average enterprise data center.

Cloud computing enables AWS to boost efficiency by focusing on the design of its data centers and hardware as well as by modeling the performance of its operations for enhanced efficiency. Traditional on-premises data centers consume a significant amount of energy and resources to keep the servers running, such as cooling systems, power backup systems, and maintenance.

By moving to the cloud, an organization can rely on the infrastructure and resources of cloud providers like AWS, who have the expertise and resources to manage the infrastructure and optimize energy consumption.

Renewable Energy Investments

To reduce carbon emissions, Amazon cofounded The Climate Pledge in 2019, and AWS is committed to powering its operations with 100 percent renewable energy by 2025, five years ahead of its original 2030 target. To make this happen, AWS is partnering with utility-scale wind and solar projects to bring clean energy to the grid.

And the best part? These renewable projects also provide economic benefits to local communities and create hundreds of jobs. In 2021, several AWS regions were already powered by over 95 percent renewable energy. These regions include parts of the US, Canada, and Europe.

Instead of maintaining their own on-premises data centers, which require significant amounts of energy to power and cool, companies can take advantage of the highly efficient infrastructure and renewable energy sources provided by cloud providers like AWS. This allows businesses to focus on their core operations while reducing their environmental impact.

Lower Embodied Carbon

By using cloud computing, AWS is taking steps to reduce the carbon footprint of its data centers, even in regard to the materials used to build them.

Steel is one of the largest contributors of embodied carbon in data center structures, but AWS is taking steps to lower embodied carbon by partnering with mills that use electric arc furnace production processes. These mills use up to 100 percent recycled content and are powered by electricity only, reducing embodied carbon by up to 70 percent.

AWS is also addressing the embodied carbon of concrete in its new US data centers. Its design standards now require concrete with a 20 percent reduction in embodied carbon compared to standard concrete. These efforts are just some of the ways working with AWS helps reduce the environmental impact of a business’s operations while contributing to a more sustainable future.

Overall, cloud computing with AWS not only enhances productivity but also helps reduce carbon emissions. With a focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy investments, and lower embodied carbon, AWS is committed to powering its operations sustainably while providing economic benefits to local communities.
